Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a wax like substance found among the lipids in the blood stream. It is also seen in all your body's cells. We classify Cholesterol into two types - LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol). Too much of LDL in the blood can form plaque, a thick hard deposit which can clog the arteries. HDL carries cholesterol away from the arteries back to the liver. Researchers believe that HDL removes excess cholesterol from plaques and slows their growth. HDL is the good cholesterol. A lack of balance in cholesterol levels in our body can cause complications like atherosclerosis. So we should take regular check ups to study the level of cholesterol in our body.

Your Blood Cholesterol Levels will Fall into these Categories:

Desirable - Less than 200 mg/dL
If your level of cholesterol is below 200 mg/dL then you have lesser heart attack risks. But it's safe to eat healthy in order avoid later risks. Depend on smart eat foods low in saturated fats. Have your cholesterol levels checked regularly.

Borderline High Risk - 200-239 mg/dL
About one third Americans fall in this borderline category. People who fall in the borderline high risk category should get their cholesterol levels checked every year. Consult your doctor to begin a new diet plan. Good exercise habits will certainly improve your poor cholesterol level- health conditions.

High Risk - 240 mg/dL and over
The high risk level brings you closer to problems like heart attacks and strokes. Nearly 20% of Americans suffer from it. You need to consult a doctor and take medications like diet pills, if necessary. Also strict weight loss or workout programs and dietary precautions are inevitable.

LDL Cholesterol Levels
Optimal: Less than 100 mg/dL
Near Optimal: 100-129 mg/dL
Borderline high: 130-159 mg/dL
High: 160-189 mg/dL
Very high: 190 mg/dL and above

The lower your LDL cholesterol, the lesser your risk of heart related problems. Initially your doctor will try to control unhealthy cholesterol levels by varying your diet, exercise. If it is not enough, then you may have to take medications such as diet pills as well.
